- Skills – The required skill needed to use this weapon. M = melee skill, R = ranged skill
- Hands – The number of hands need to wield the weapon properly. 1 handed weapons leave room for a shield or 2nd weapon
- Edge – Number of surface contact areas on the weapon
- Penetration – This is only used with piercing, chopping or, slashing attacks. Each attack adds damage to the armor/shield it hits and allows the attack to by-pass that amount of armor. Normally some of the damage is absorbed by the armor based on its armor value with penetration that damage is applied to the armor instead. Once the armor/shield has taken damage equal to or greater than its health it is destroyed and is useless.
- Piercing – Damage caused by a piercing attack. Piercing attacks drives a point of a weapon in a thrust
- Chopping – Damage caused by a chopping attack. Chopping attacks drives a edge of a weapon in a chooping
- Slashing – Damage caused by a slashing attack. Slashing attacks drags a weapons edge over a target
- Bludgeoning – Damage caused by a bludgeoning attack. Bludgeoning attacks are also handled differently than others. A bludgeoning attack does not try to cut the opponent, it seeks to damage the internal organs and break bones. Against hard armor, like a breast plate it can dent the armor and leave it clamped against the target making breathing difficult, which will increase their PAP expenditure. So with a critical strike with a bludgeoning attack the target must make a health save or suffer the “crippled” effect. If the target is also wearing heavy armor then they will suffer a +1 PAP per critical strike while they continue to wear the armor.
- Reach/Range - In melee this is the number of spaces for a creature to strike a target based on the attackers reach and -1 per weapon size difference. So a medium character using a medium weapon with 1x reach can attack any opponent within 3 space around them. If the same creature is using a small weapon with a 1x reach they can hit any space within 2 spaces.
- Speed – A measure of how a weapon can be used round to round. Combat happens in a sequence going from one participant to another in the combat oder they roll using a d20 + agility + any powers that add to combat order. The highest number goes first. After a character goes they adjust their combat based on the speed of the weapon they use. So it is possible that a player can go twice in the same round based on there weapon they use. For example a player has a 10 on the combat order and is the highest number rolled. Using a dagger he goes again on 2, then he will go on 4 then 6, etc... If this same character uses a flail with a -4 speed he will go on 10 1st round, then 6 on the round following this one.
- Fatigue – Some weapons may also take more PAP to use in combat due to weight.
- Difficulty – A unwieldy weapon, such as a flail takes more skill to handle than a gladius. The will modify yoour attack with the weapon being used.
- Special – some weapons are design to perform a specific function in combat.
- Weight – Weight is a physical weight in pounds and a minimum strength needed to properly handle the weapon. If your character lacks the needed strength they will suffer an additional +1 PAP cost while using it.
- Health – This is a measure of how much damage the weapon can take before breaking.
- Cost – in gold.
In many R.P.G. system the designers have decided on simplicity when deciding on how to define a weapon and the type of damage it can cause, or they simply stated a damage amount. I have decided on a more complex system to “I hope” capture the feel of the real weapon in combat. As an example think of a standard sword, like a rapier. You can stab with it, slash, chop (if your desperate) and use the pommel to bludgeon your opponent. Some of these attacks result in better damage compaired to other attack types. This reflects the weapons design, or how it was meant to be used. So the rapier does better damage with a piercing attack than a bludgeoning attack. Yet a Battle Axe in comparison is designed for chopping and will do more damage with a chopping attack.
Items listed are for a tiny sized creature. For larger sizes follow the link for changes in cost, weight, etc..
For characters that want to use a weapon made for a larger sized race the damage types are increased as normal but the speed and difficulty are at -5 per size category difference and fatigue is doubled or +2 PAP, which ever is greater.
If a character wants to use a smaller size weapon use the specs for that size, and reduce the difficulty by 2.
