Appearance
The Sphinx are a species of large lions with a humanoid head. The female Sphinx has long and unkempt hair and a more human like face The teeth are sharp and designed to eat meat but the jaw is not very powerful for biting, like a lioness would be. The male Sphinx has a more lion like head with a humanoid face surrounded by a large mane. The ears are set higher on the head and are pointed. The face is slightly elongated to form a short muzzle. The nose is colored black and is flat, wide and extends to the upper lips which are also black. The face looks to have a permanent and wicked smile.
Attitude
What motivates a Sphinx is uncertain but they appear to be focused on herding travelers to areas that contain other creatures or even hidden locations or ruins. For the few bards and chroniclers that know the legends of the Sphinx it has been suggested that it may be a method of territorial warfare by proxy. This does not appear to be true as some of the locations have only a small villages of common folk while some monsters have been simple creatures the Sphinx could easily handle themselves. Still others suggest that the Sphinx are intentionally testing the courage and wit of the traveler and eliminating those that fail their test. As for why these beast would do such a thing is uncertain. If anything it simply adds to the mystery of the Sphinx.
Leadership
Sphinx travel in a pride lead by a large male. The entire pride is nomadic and will stay in one area for about a year or two and them move on to some other location.
Encounter Tactics
The Sphinx are an enlightened and mystical species of beast. They communicate mentally with those that they encounter often posing a question or presenting the target with a dilemma. This is only done after the sphinx is ready and it has prepared for the encounter. A Sphinx does not always make direct contact sometimes they maneuver the target to a desired location by manufacturing obstacles to impede the targets travels. If the target fails to take the hint and travel to where the Sphinx desires then the Sphinx will present itself as a final obstacle by denying further travel beyond them unless they can answer a riddle, otherwise the Sphinx will kill them. In truth the Sphinx will try to rout the target in the direction they have been trying to get them to go all along. If the target will not flee then they have no choice but to kill them. Size does not bother a sphinx for they will attack in a organized group if the target possess to big a threat for one to handle. It is not common for the male sphinx to take part in the questioning of travelers as they prefer to hang back and watch unless they are needed for combat in which case they charge force force into.
