Appearance
Gnomes are small humanoids that live in subterranean caverns. They have serrated teeth in a wide mouth and no body hair. Their bodies are thin with large heads, hands and feet. Their skin is pale and their eyes are large and black from their limit exposure to daylight.
Attitude
Life underground is difficult for all subterranean creatures, food is not as abundant as it is on the surface and water can be toxic, not to mention the gas eruptions, cave ins, etc... Gnomes have not only survived in this world they have mastered it. In Gnomish society there is no greater crime than waste. Everything must be recycled in order to grow the population, even the dead are recycled. This is not to say they eat their dead, this is a taboo and will result in banishment or death. The Gnomes have a complex funeral service that results in the dead’s body being reduced into its basic materials which then used in building mortar or even in building paints.
Architecture
Legends of Gnomes guarding vast underground treasures is partly true. Gnomes often build their cities near fresh water aquifers and mineral deposits that are used in the construction of their cities and equipment. These sites are jealously guarded by the Gnomes. The Gnomish Cities have large circular buildings with thick walls that are also used to support cavern spans. Wide arched bridges join streets together that are ringed around the buildings. Ramps allow people to move up and down different levels. The light levels are kept very dim which suits the Gnomes just fine. The Light source is a fungus that is grown on the ceiling over a city.
Leadership
Gnomes have a king and queen and also noble houses.
