Appearance
Gargoyles are animated statues designed as guardians against evil spirits. They are made from stone and are medium sized with a grotesque face styled like a demon, animal or bird. The mouth is always open and unmoving. Deep inside the Gargoyles throat sit a spiritual orb that is said to draw in the apparition it hunts, destroying it in the process. Gargoyles can have wings but they are useless for flight. Because they are made from solid stone they are much heavier than their size would suggest. Any damage is repaired slowly slowly like that of a person who has bed rest. Gargoyles do not sleep.
Attitude
A gargoyle is driven by a basic need to create more of its kind. It can commonly be found hunting spirits to consume. After a time a new spiritual orb begins to form and the gargoyle will move to deep within the earth and will use its own claws to form a replica of itself, a skill it is surprisingly apt at. Once complete it will deposit the newly completed spiritual orb into. When spirits are difficult to find they can turn to other living creatures. Undead creatures seem to be of little interest to a gargoyle, but will defend itself from them. Other golems are also treated with the same regard.
Leadership
Gargoyles do not speak, posture or otherwise communicate. They have been seen in groups sitting in a circle motionless for hours and then getting up and going off in pairs or individually to continue hunting the spirits and the living.
Encounter Tactics
When hunting spirits the gargoyles are relentless. When hunting a adventurous group they seem to prefer a more sadistic approach of quietly walking into an unwary camp and siphoning a life from a sleeping target and leaving the others alone. A gargoyle will stalk a group until it can kill them all or is in the presence of spirits, its preferred food. A gargoyle will either attack with claws to make the victim helpless of it will grapple its opponent. At any rate it will wait until it has the advantage and can subdue its target to suck the life out of them. This goes for spirits too as their cold hand can grapple or attack them too.
