Appearance
Centaurs are the classic species of legend. The torso, arms, hand and head of a human are found where the neck and head of a horse would be. The rest of the centaur is all horse, 4 legs and tail included. The shape of the head is longer than a humans and takes on distinctive horse features. The ears are moved higher on the head. The eyes are also higher on the head but provide a slightly wider field of view than a human has. The hair on the head is commonly long and thick running along the back of the torso where it joins the horse body. All of the body is covered in a fine short coat of fur. Coloration varies as does patterns. The arms of the centaur are muscular even on the females.
Attitude
Centaurs are generally an agreeable people and enjoy the freedom of the open plains where they can run at full speed for fun, sport or hunting. Females without children to raise are just as likely to join in these activities as is a male. And both will take to defending their clan. The Centaurs weapon of choice is the Bow which they use with their speed to keep opponents at a distance. If they must go into melee they will usually use a lance and charge. The spear is another weapon Centaurs make good use of in close quarters and have custom made quivers to hold a good number of them.
Centaurs are a deeply spiritual people with a strong connection to natural forces and their ancestors. Arcane magic is viewed with suspicion and is seen as unnatural. Any Centaur known to use arcane magic would be considered an outcast.
Architecture
Centaurs are a strong and simple people and their structures represent that. Cities of any size are surrounded by truly massive earthen walls with ramps on the inside that lead up to a 12 space wide walk way around the top. Stone walls are inset on the top and separated by 2 space area that is used as a place to shoot arrows from. The homes and buildings are often simple wooden beams that support a earthen roof that is 4 spaces thick. The walls are little more than cloth or woven mats that hang down and staked to the ground. Although the architecture skills the Centaurs seams simple their most impressive structure is their irrigation systems are well renowned and little understood. It has been said a Centaur can make water run up a hill if they want it to. This is said to be down without the aid of any magic.
Leadership
Centaurs are separated into clans with each having a clan chieftain that is usually male, but females can raise to chieftain level. Centaurs identify their clan relation by use of a painted mark that can be found on the fore-thigh in plain sight. In larger cities a Seysen ( a sort of grand chieftain ) is selected from all the Chieftains and is burdened with the responsibility to lead all clans within the city. The clan chiefs act as a council to the Seysen. A Seysen rules as long as his decisions please he other chiefs by majority vote. A truly terrible Seysen will result in the Centaur clans leaving the city with only him in it. Clan-less and left to die.
Noble Dress
Chieftains are notable for having more embellishments braided into their manes. These are often shells, feathers, strips of colorful cloth and beads. A Seysen has these removed when elected and instead has his mane tightly braided so it stands straight out and the hair colored a bright color of his choice. The face painted in a white mask and his clan marking is removed as the Seysen now represents all clans within his city. A new chieftain is then selected by the clan and a ceremonial funeral is head for the former one (now the Seysen).
Devotes Dress
Devotes wear little but do decorate their manes with feathers and wear a hat made to look like a bird of prey. Their faces are often painted red with black circles around the eye. A large number of bone, tooth, claw, feather and twig necklaces are worn.
Combatant Dress
Most combatant Centaurs wear light armor or no armor at all as they prefer speed and maneuverability, Some combatants wear full plate and make use of the lance in combat.
Merchant Dress
Merchants use poles with colorful square flags that are topped with bells. These poles are used to attract attention to themselves and their wares. Needless to say a Centaur Market is a very noisy place. Centaur Merchants visiting other species markets often refer to them as being to quiet, like a grave yard.
Trades Dress
The trades often wear heavy woven or leather aprons depending on the trade. Otherwise you can only tell them apart from other common Centaurs by the tools they carry.
Commoner Dress
Centaurs of all levels of status do not wear much in way of clothing. Females that are active will commonly wear a top to strap down their breast mainly as a issue of comfort when running, hunting or adventuring. Side bags are common of men and women and are worn just behind the human torso. They are used like oversized pockets. Weapons are a common sight on all Centaurs with bows and daggers being found even on children.
